What is a transcription? Something short of a copy, a sketch from a painting you love, or a work made in response to another painting. Think of this class like a weekly trip to your favorite museum to sketch from the collection, with a bunch of dedicated painters from all over the world—we will analyze the works of great painters from history and the present, and borrow from them in conceiving and creating our own works.
Instructor posts 6 -10 images per week to use as source material—we all work from the same images, giving us an opportunity to notice the differences in the things we notice, and a great opportunity for comparison.
“A deep thematic thread runs through all of my work, it’s a ‘vanitas’ sort of message, to take the time to be present, to notice the magic of noticing, the richness of what’s right in front of us. I think that there is something radical in making work that is intimate in scale and quiet in its content and its aims–it strikes me as a tonic, an antidote, for our times, which are increasingly dehumanized, and in which people are living lives that are increasingly disembodied, mediated by a screen, and constantly stimulated. My art is about connecting with this world, this moment, as it is, as deeply as possible.” www.gageopdenbrouw.com
