Henri Matisse (1869-1954) was an incredible colorist, designer, and one of the leading lights of Modern painting through his entire career. His relentless formal innovation and incredible painterly vocabulary stand as an open book of great ideas.
Far from content to dwell on past successes, Matisse always continued to forge ahead, take risks, and as Richard Deibenkorn put it, “attempt the uncertain”.
In this two-week class with Gage Opdenbrouw, you will begin by making quick drawings and paintings, transcribing works by Matisse, working into more ambitious master copies, then finally adopting strategies learned and inspirations taken from the study of this great master’s work, using them in the development of your own paintings. Class includes lectures, live demos, in-class discussion and instructor feedback.

When he’s not working, he is most often found in Northern California among some of the tallest and quietest trees on earth, where the illuminated fog sweeps in from the pacific. He shares his home and studio in the redwoods with his love, writer Kelly Gray, and two dogs: Hank, a terrier/beagle who remembers every single place he ever found street chicken, and Nootka, a very vocal and sweet husky pup who looks like the best giant squirrel ever. He plays bass and guitar, very poorly and with great enthusiasm. www.gageopdenbrouw.com
