Abstraction doesn’t have to be complicated.  You can develop ideas for abstractions from small beginnings.  Artists will use a variety of simple “starts” to create abstracts in soft pastel and/or mixed media acrylic paintings. Techniques will include loosening up exercises, expressive mark making, automatic drawing and painting and techniques for both pastel and acrylic painting.  Artists will use small paintings, crops of photos and previous works and nature drawings to create simple compositions for abstracts.  A final critique session will be held two weeks later for works created during the workshop.

Debora Stewart is a Signature Member and a Master Pastellist of the Pastel Society of America and a member of the Master’s Circle of the International Association of Pastel Societies. She is also the author of a Northlight book titled Abstract Art Painting: Expressions in Mixed Media and a series of videos on abstract painting from Northlight TV. She teaches workshops for artists in abstraction throughout the U.S.  Her pastels and paintings are available through galleries in Arizona, Georgia, Louisiana, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Illinois. deborastewart.com
