Join pastel and acrylics artist for this five-week online class. Debora’s work is primarily non-objective abstracts but she also works with abstract realism like florals, figures and faces. This course will show you how to develop ideas for abstracts through the use of photographs, line drawings, intuitive mark making, previous artworks and more. We will cover both soft pastel and acrylic mixed media painting. Demonstrations will be provided for both mediums. Participants will learn how to develop abstracts from a variety of source material, composition, value, color, line and materials and methods. Thorough handouts and follow up exercises are provided for each week.

Week One: Using Photographs to Find Ideas for Abstracts

• Black and white photos and viewfinders
• Thumbnail sketches exploring compositions
• Create small color studies from thumbnail sketches
• Use thumbnails for small abstract works in pastel and/or acrylic mixed media

Week Two: Using a Drawing to Find Ideas for Abstracts

• Use an existing drawing to find ideas for an abstract painting
• Create a charcoal drawing from this source material
• Use your charcoal drawing to create a pastel and/or an acrylic mixed media painting

Week Three: Using an Intuitive Drawing to Mine Ideas for Abstracts

• Create an intuitive drawing with charcoal or black paint
• Isolate areas for possible compositions
• Use these areas to create a limited color palette pastel/and or acrylic mixed media painting

Week Four: Creating a Series to Find Ideas for Abstracts

• Create four paintings from one to discover strong abstract compositions
• Use your strongest compositions to create a pastel/and or acrylic mixed media painting

Week Five: Create One Work from Another

• Isolate a segment from another work to create a new work
• Change this segment to a gray scale and use a different color scheme • Create a new work in pastel and/or acrylic mixed media painting

Supplementary materials include handout on compositions, acrylic mixed media techniques and materials, pastel techniques and evaluating your work.

Debora Stewart is a Signature Member and a Master Pastellist of the Pastel Society of America and a member of the Master’s Circle of the International Association of Pastel Societies. She is also the author of a Northlight book titled Abstract Art Painting: Expressions in Mixed Media and a series of videos on abstract painting from Northlight TV. She teaches workshops for artists in abstraction throughout the U.S.  Her pastels and paintings are available through galleries in Arizona, Georgia, Louisiana, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Illinois.
