Mixed media is a wild goose chase down a twisted rabbit hole. It involves a series of what if questions: what if I glued this down, drew a line over the top, added some paint, glued something else down, and then sanded a portion, added more paint, made marks, then started over. Working loosely and intuitively, we will use scraps of wallpaper, worn ephemera, hand painted papers that we create, and materials scavenged from discarded books; we will create a deck of 25 collages on 4×6-inch mat board pieces (or on heavy watercolor paper). We will discuss design elements, compositions (including grids, strata, and asymmetrical layouts), and add interest by creating differences using color, texture, busy against calm, etc.
Creating these collages is a wild cacophony of cutting, tearing, drawing, gluing, painting, writing, scraping, sanding, layering, and revealing. Our pieces will reflect curiosity, playfulness, irreverence, and our love of texture, color, history, and an element of surprise. By the end of class, we will have a collection of cards reflecting various techniques and styles to use as a reference deck or a beautiful collection of collages to display in a wood box.
