Level: All levels welcome
Medium: Oil and cold wax
Kick off the new year by painting with the luxurious medium of oil paint mixed with cold wax. Let’s stretch our notion of what a landscape is and take it to new levels: looser, freer, and a bit more unconventional. Working in a series using multiple layers of oil and cold wax, we will create paintings using vibrant color, mark-making, swaths of paint, and incorporating lines and circles into our work, reimagining the landscape.
Cold wax is a versatile medium that creates rich luminosity, interesting surfaces, and speeds up drying time. We will apply this medium using squeegees, putty, and palette knives. Our emphasis will be on painting vibrant and colorful abstracted landscapes using our imaginations or reference photos for inspiration. We will experiment with laying down swaths of paint, building texture, scraping away, and then doing it all again. We will work intuitively and energetically on multiple pieces, exploring texture, layers, composition and design, and the use of color. The layers dry quickly, and clean-up is done with baby oil.
Reimagined? What if our lines are just a bit more exaggerated. Or we insert patterns in the sky? What if our color choices are a bit more outlandish? Or our proportions a bit skewed? What marks can we make that cause a gasp of delight or momentarily take our breath away. Let’s play and experiment a bit freer and see where our imaginations can take us in our work as we welcome in the new year.
