Join David Mensing online for this exciting, inspiring course in the understanding and application of critical compositional principles in representational paintings. While it cannot be disputed that an appealing design is essential, many artists rely on chance or trial-and-error when composing a fine painting.  An artist must learn to think beyond simply duplicating a subject – an artist must be a designer.  Every artist should understand and implement tangible and practical principles for compositional improvement.

This course will help students understand compositional principles and offer specific techniques to avoid awkward or boring designs. Students will be encouraged to experiment with new techniques to create dynamic, compelling paintings.

With lively discussion, demonstration and exercises, we will explore critical concepts and useful tools for compositional improvement.  Discussion topics will include universal laws of asthetics, balance, movement, exciting shapes, major value masses and the use of linear perspective.  Throughout the course, each student will have the opportunity to apply the principles in their own painting.

Attention to certain key principles of painting can accelerate growth as an artist.  Even modest growth in these areas can have profound impact on overall quality of work.  An artist of any skill level that develops a deeper appreciation and understanding of design is poised to make significant improvement in their work.

Throughout this online course, expect to enjoy group instruction and demonstration with assigned exercises to be completed between classes.  At the conclusion of the four-week course, you will have new tools and a new outlook to take your paintings to the next level.

David Mensing‘s paintings are featured in collections and exhibitions across the nation and around the globe. He grew up in Iowa, surrounded by wide prairies and carefully groomed cornfields.  When he moved to The West as a young man, he was captivated by its raw beauty. Mensing’s ambition is to know and share that beauty through his work.  For Dave, each painting is a statement – his architectural background contributes to his compelling designs and he is careful to select titles that reflect the character and spiritual basis of the work.

David Mensing lives in Sisters, Oregon with his wife and their three children.

Numerous periodicals have featured his work with cover images and feature articles, including American Art Collector, Southwest Art and Western Art Collector.  Recent national awards include Southwest Art’s ‘Award of Excellence’ in Icons of the West and Art and Soul:  ‘Professional Juror / Best of Show.’ davidmensingfineart.com
