Level: All
Medium: Oil
The primary focus of this class will be to develop an oil painting, with an emphasis on the steps and methods for completing a multi-layered painting.
Students will begin the class with quick, broad, placement of color spots to establish the general compositional structure and a hierarchy of edges coinciding with the painter’s pictorial intent. As the paintings progress, more attention will be given to the specificity of the motif, as well as the refinement of shapes, edges, and color relationships.
Classes will consist of pre-recorded demonstrations with real-time commentary and individualized one-on-one critiques of student work. In addition to introducing various compositional strategies, other class topics will include edge and value hierarchies, and the various technical processes for oil painting in layers.
A slide lecture of the instructor’s own artistic influences will be given during the class in order to facilitate discussions about developing studio work that has meaning and personal significance.
