One of the things that really makes trips enjoyable for me is to take along a sketchbook and travel watercolor kit to quickly capture a scene. I’ve found that doing this helps me to slow down and be very present in that moment and at that place. When I look at my sketchbook later, maybe long after I’m home again, the drawings and notes bring me back to that moment in a very immediate and evocative way. It’s this pleasure I hope to encourage students to feel, too.

Capturing our impressions in the moment by using quick line studies along with watercolor wash can get our creative juices flowing. Suitable for all skill levels, this 3 week course will introduce the excitement, freedom and immediacy of using ink (and pencil) lines with various watercolor applications.

In this course will offer techniques and methods to quickly capture travel moments, even if you’ve never picked up a paintbrush. By learning the fundamentals of watercolor and line & wash, you will come away feeling ready to record those moments while out in the world.

Lecture and demonstrations, along with a variety of in-class assignments and homework will contribute to developing strong, successful skills and habits; our critique session will offer gentle feedback and encouragement, contributing to student mastery.
