One of the most baffling problems for artists is to decide how to create a compelling composition; one that tells a narrative and keeps the viewers’ eyes riveted to the scene. During development, there are issues to be tackled – whether to make something lighter/darker, bigger/smaller, brighter/duller; how to guide the eye around the painting. This 4 week course will allow us to take an in-depth look at topics within composition development such as notan & chiaroscuro, elements & principles, balances & extremes, contrasts and much more. We will use skill building exercises, in-class & homework assignments and weekly critique sessions to cement our growing understanding.
