It seems so appropriate to continue our exploration of the origins of color with RED on St. Valentine’s Day.
In color theory, Red is not only a primary color, but it is most likely the first color to be mastered by humans. Red iron oxide was used to create the famous Red Bison in the caves of Altamura.
Red is also deeply symbolic. It represents themes as various as life, health, war, courage, anger, love and religious fervor.
Join Chris for a tour of red through the ages of art, followed with demonstrations using different pigments of this featured color, RED.
From organic oxides and insect carapaces, to lead, mercury and cadmium based red pigments. Whether you are an art history buff or a dedicated artist wanting to know more about your materials, this class will inform, inspire and is sure to increase your love of color.

Chris teaches private and studio classes emphasizing proper use of materials and technique. At the same time she guides each student, no matter what their level of experience, to move towards developing their own individual expression.
She has a BA in Art from the University of Detroit. www.chriswitkowski.com
