A sketchbook is the perfect place to explore new techniques, study your subjects, and develop creative ideas – even if you are away from your studio. In this four-week class, we will explore spontaneous sketching techniques with watercolor in combination with ink, graphite, water-soluble colored pencil, paint markers, and gouache (and anything else you might want to try!)
Each week of the class will focus on a different topic: sketching basic objects, flowers, outdoor scenes, and people. All of these topics provide interesting drawing challenges and new ways to use the materials. We will focus especially on using our materials expressively to describe texture, form, and space. Students are encouraged to sketch directly from life, which helps to improve drawing and observation skills.
Our approach will emphasize a painterly style, centered on shape and color. Catherine’s background in academic art allows her to bring a balance of fundamental drawing skills to this expressive approach. Each demonstration will illuminate some simple concepts that will help to improve your sense of gesture, form, and light.
This is a great class for students of all experience levels. Expand your horizons with new subjects and techniques!
