This engaging and inspiring workshop is all about embracing simplicity and rediscovering the joy of paint. Designed for artists of all levels, whether you’re just beginning or more experienced, it offers a fresh approach to loosening up and deepening your appreciation for the expressive beauty of paint. Using still life painted from life as our ideal subject, this four-week journey focuses on strengthening your foundation while invigorating your creative practice.
Throughout the course, you’ll gain a clear understanding of how to confidently begin a painting, develop beautiful and expressive mark-making, achieve rich, luminous paint quality, sculpt form with your brush, and capture light in a way that brings your subject to life. We’ll remain grounded in the essential fundamentals- shape, value, edges, and colour – while building the skills and self-assurance needed to unify these elements into sensitive, compelling work.
In the first session, we’ll explore how to thoughtfully set up a still life, considering the design choices that create a strong and harmonious composition. Bobbi will demonstrate a painting using simple subjects, emphasizing the importance of a strong start and intentional decision-making.
Each week, Bobbi will present a new still life and painting demonstration, expanding on the key ideas and concepts introduced in the first session. Every class will highlight a different focus and result in a new painting, allowing students to see the principles applied in varied and meaningful ways.
Participants will receive reference photos of each still life setup (while Bobbi paints from life) and may choose to paint alongside her or simply observe and work independently later. During each demonstration, Bobbi will clearly explain her process, and students are encouraged to ask questions throughout.
Artists will also receive optional homework and are invited to share photos of their work with the group during weeks two, three, and four. This workshop is designed to transform the way you approach your painting practice. You’ll leave with renewed confidence, a deeper understanding of core principles, and a refreshed perspective that will support and strengthen your work across all genres.
