Painting with watercolors have earned an unfair reputation of being too difficult to control and too frustrating to use. Unlike oils and acrylics, watercolors are transparent and need to be handled differently.   In this class, we will learn how to embrace the unique properties of this medium to create loose and luscious paintings.  We will begin by discussing some of the very basics and then we will quickly jump into exercises that will have you painting with lots of paint, water, and bigger brushes. We will discuss how to paint both soft and hard edges, save your whites, use negative spaces, and have fun with the medium.  By the end of this course, you will have completed warm-up assignments and 3-4 paintings that you’ll be proud to share with others.  This course is open to both beginners well as experienced artists.

Barbara Kidd is an artist and teacher whose primary medium is watercolor.  Born in San Francisco and raised outside of Portland, Oregon, Barbara moved to Salt Lake City nearly 30 years ago. In between these moves, she has lived and worked in Asia and Europe.  She attended Lewis and Clark College and received a B.A. in education and a M.A. in Psychology. Barbara has attended numerous art workshops taught by nationally acclaimed artists including Thomas Schaller, Ted Nuttall, Roland Lee, and Jean Haines, to name a few.

As an artist, Barbara strives to capture the essence of a scene by simplifying the subject matter while preserving strong values and vibrant colors. When she is not painting, she enjoys teaching others and working with the art community in SLC.  She has taught adults and kids the joy of painting at both the Visual Art Institute and the McGillis School for over 20 years. She is a Signature Member of the Utah Watercolor Society, member of Western Federation of Watercolor Societies, and has participated in numerous local and regional art exhibitions. barbarakiddart.com.
