Supply List

How many ways might a landscape sketch be made and for what purpose?  This is the question you’ll explore with a specific focus each class as listed below.

The landscapes you’ll sketch will be made using your imagination, based on photographs, memory, and sometimes inspired by master paintings.

Here’s a list of each week’s landscape possibilities:

  • Week 1: What happens when you add a figure to the landscape?
  • Week 2: What changes occur when you move the horizon line up or down the page?
  • Week 3: How might the rhythms of nature be explored in a sketch?
  • Week 4: How far can the abstraction of nature be pushed while retaining a recognizable landscape?

Every class begins with a slideshow lecture that includes master artists’ examples to inspire and explore the sketch objectives of the day. Barbara will also give demos and critique your sketches made during the session.

This is a mixed media sketchbook class. Both wet and dry media will be used, including conté crayon, pencil, color pencil, watercolor, gouache, and water-soluble artist crayons. This is an expressive sketchbook class, working loosely using inventive and dynamic colors is always encouraged.
