Supply List

The “sketchbook spirit” is to be loose, experimental, inventive, and curious. With that spirit in mind, learn to bring your portrait sketches to life using a variety of lines, invented color, and dynamic values. The overall aim is for a balance between personal expression and physical likeness.

Drawing loosely requires lots of practice making marks and learning to see form before details. This class begins with learning basic proportions of the face and head, as well as experimenting with emotive lines. The class will focus on using expressive color, shape, line and texture to convey personality and character, rather than representational likeness.

You’ll work from your own reflection in a mirror and from an art model, too.
This is a mixed media class, supplies include watercolor, gouache, water-soluble crayons, pencils, and black conté crayon. Some drawing experience is recommended.
