Unleash your imagination as you explore the world of abstraction in this five-week course.

Abstract art uses imagined shapes, colors, and lines to translate experiences felt and observed.  In this Expressive Sketchbook class, you will discover the language of abstract shapes, both geometric and biomorphic, while progressing the degrees of abstraction with each session.  In the first sessions you will abstract from something seen and by the end of the five-week course you’ll create pure abstract compositions.  Additionally, abstract paintings by artists including Kandinsky, Klee, Miro, and Georgia O’Keeffe will be discussed as you learn about compositional balance, spatial concepts, and the expressive power of color and line.

Mixed media (including watercolor, gouache, artist crayons, charcoal or conté crayon) will be used in sketchbooks.  Some collage will be incorporated into your class work, as well.

Welcome to a sketchbook course that leads you from representational sketches to a world of pure abstraction.
