Color is a powerful tool for our sketchbooks. Color grabs our attention, creates depth, and it’s a great way to organize a composition. We also connect with color emotionally and intellectually. Exploring these aspects of color in your sketchbooks with quick and focused exercises is a great way to learn more about this multifaceted art principle.
While sketching loosely and expressively, you’ll practice counterbalancing with color, moving color shapes and lines in space, learn the power of color contrasts, and more. Various artists and art movements will be referenced as you learn about Modernist color, too.
Subject matter includes figure, still life, and abstraction. You will sketch with mixed media (including gouache, watercolor, artist water-soluble crayons, and conté crayon). Some drawing experience is recommended.
