Are you at a point in your painting practice where you’ve developed confidence in color mixing, drawing, and composition—but feel your work has plateaued? Do you find yourself wanting to push beyond realism and introduce more abstraction, yet aren’t sure how to get there?

This class is designed to help you break through that barrier. We will focus on keeping your paintings dynamic and alive by using a range of tools and techniques to disrupt the surface when it becomes too controlled, overworked, or precious. You’ll learn how to move and manipulate paint to soften edges, unify color, and introduce compelling elements of abstraction.

Each session will begin with a discussion and slideshow, followed by a still life demonstration exploring various surface-disrupting techniques. We’ll also cover the process of painting back into your work—how to reestablish key elements, and how to thoughtfully navigate the balance between realism and abstraction. Students will also get personalized feedback on their work as they explore these new techniques.

Students are welcome to work from life or photo reference. Open to all levels, this class welcomes artists working in oil or acrylic.
