Supply List

In this workshop, you will explore three printmaking methods: monotype, drypoint, and relief.  Monotype is made by painting on a smooth surface and then “pulling” one unique print. We will use a gel (or gelli) plate to transfer water-based printmaking ink or acrylic paint to paper without the need for a printing press. Monotype can produce painterly marks, bold shapes, and diverse textures that suggest details in the landscape. Drypoint involves scratching into a surface (plate) with a range of tools, then working ink into the groves, wiping off the surface, and hand printing. Drypoint produces fine lines akin to drawing. We will experiment with different drypoint plates, including plastic and recycled TetraPak cartons. Relief is the opposite of drypoint: carving into a surface and then inking that surface to produce a print. Relief has a graphic quality, producing bold shapes, textures, and varied lines. TetraPak can be used for both drypoint and relief. We will combine these methods in various ways to develop dynamic unique, one-of-a-kind landscapes that can range from realistic to abstract. If students have access to a press they are welcome to use it instead of hand-printing. Students will be able to share their work online for group discussion and instructor feedback.
