In this three-session class, we will examine a wide range of collage approaches by master artists, such as Henri Matisse, Kurt Schwitters, Hannah Hoch, Robert Rauchenberg, and Betye Saar. Contemporary collage artists will also be explored. Their works will inspire and inform the subjects, methods, and materials you will use in your own collages.
Adhesives and substrates, creating collage papers, sources for found materials, and the use of text as both a visual and conceptual element, will be covered along with effective use of line, shape, color and composition.
Rather than copy the artworks, you will transform what you learn into your own unique expression. Students can share their collages and discuss how they chose to interpret the artworks covered each week through the virtual classroom. All experience levels are welcome.
