When I think of the painting I respond to most exuberantly, it’s almost always an image that says the most with minimal adornment.  A poem versus a novel.  Have you ever had the experience of slogging away on a painting all day, only to find that the twenty minute painting, made with the end-of-day paint, sings like a bird? The only way you made that little jewel was by exercising restraint (what’s the essence of what I need to do here), distillation (get to the point!), engagement (I already failed so let’s just let the brush talk) and liberation (hooray, this is actually fun again!).

Let’s work together to make those twenty minutes extend to a longer working period, so that we can be exuberant, energetic, and excited about the painting process.  We are going to make errors and accidents…. and build some artistic muscle memory with the paint brush, so that spontaneity becomes part of your daily practice.

While I will be working in oil, you can work in the medium of your choice, as the focus of the series is to build confidence and focus on essentials in your images and your practice.

Sign up for one or take all four of these workshops as a series. Each session includes a 2-hour Zoom lesson with Amy and a private class group message board for students to share their work and give and get feedback.  $75 per workshop, $260 for the series.

Monday, October 31 – Restraint: Saying More with Less

With this session, we will work with time limits and image making.  Resist the temptation to add brushstrokes, extra dabs of paint,  and rework areas because we just don’t know what to do next.  Participants can work during this presentation or later.  We will discuss the idea of restraint within an artistic practice, look at related work together,  and then work on time and stroke limited paintings. Participants will work on a composition of their choice during the week and receive feedback from Amy.  Amy will work in oil, but participants can work in their medium of choice.

Monday, November 14 – Distillation: Get to the Essence

Use abstraction in a representational painting to get to the core of what is going on in a composition and to understand how major forms relate to one another.  We will work together, discovering major shapes in a variety of paintings, and then Amy will demonstrate her use of shapes, decision making and ignoring unnecessary information while constructing a painting. Participants will work on a composition of their choice during the week and receive feedback from Amy.  Amy will work in oil but participants can work in their medium of choice.

Monday, November 28 – Engagement: Connection with the Process

Dragging your brush around the surface when you don’t know how to proceed with your painting?  End up with too many muddy paintings, lacking in brilliance and radiant color? This workshop focuses on staying engaged, and utilizing actions to force change, keeping you interested and energized with the painting process.  We will look at paintings that exude energy and engage the viewer, Amy will work on a demonstration in class in which she works to fire up a tired painting, and participants will then work on a painting of their own that they seek to energize and receive feedback from Amy.  Amy will work in oil but participants can work in their medium of choice.

Monday, December 12 – Liberation: Letting Your Brush Go

Within the confines of a thoughtful painting, there is much room for experimentation with color relationships, stroke, form and composition.  This workshop will focus on painterly expression while you simultaneously build a painting from observation. We will build a still life painting and play around with composition, inter-relationships with objects, and use this backbone, or skeletal structure, in order to more freely experiment with your paint and brushes.  We will build a still life composition together and Amy will demonstrate a painting, using structural techniques in the background while she experiments with brush work and color.  Amy will work in oil but participants can work in their medium of choice.
