Join Amis Balcomb in a step-by-step exploration of the human face to create unique portraits in proportion for both realistic and abstract techniques. In this four-week Simple Sketch workshop, we will apply the art concepts of human face proportions, shape, line, value, texture, specifically to human facial features including hair, and the upper torso.
In these simple sketch sessions, the approach will be to accept where you are in your skill level, and to allow yourself to experiment using a water-soluble graphite crayon, a waterproof ink pen, and watercolor, on various watercolor and mixed media papers. Any drawing or painting experience is always a plus, but no prerequisite art skills are required. By applying the art concepts and experimenting with the media you will discover spontaneous imagery that appears. That will determine what you might do next. With each composition you will be able to exercise your creative thinking in where facial features go until you feel you have reached a finished piece. Each composition will increase your knowledge of the materials and give you ideas for your next portrait.
• Week 1: Curving Organic Lines and Shapes in Specific Places
• Week 2: Variations in Eye Features and Matching Eyes
• Week 3: Variations in Facial Features
• Week 4: Combing Abstract and Realistic Elements for Creative Portraits
“It is rewarding to witness students expanding their creative thinking and art skills through the process of simply creating artwork. It is in the process of doing where magic occurs. The hand-eye coordination and fine-motor skills that are developed by using the art materials and tools in specific ways translates into refined visual problem solving that can be applied across disciplines.”
