In this visually rich and interactive class, students will be guided through the development of the color and styles of contemporary landscape painting from its beginnings in the 16th century to the modern era, with a focus on the Dutch Landscape painters, the English and French plein air painters, Impressionist landscape painting and early modern forms of personal expression in landscape painting.

Each class will include the visual history of the topic, color palettes, materials and techniques of the style of each approach, and a video demo by the instructor of each approach. Master copies as well using photos and observational painting will be addressed.

Student learning goals include gaining a comprehensive understanding of the development of landscape painting as well growth in personal style and individualized painting approaches.

Weekly project assignments will be critiques by the instructor.
