Using the “flat shadows” approach, we’ll do a number of head studies. This is your chance to dive in and really understand the importance of shadow shapes—they must be as simple as possible, and at the same time they must be informative. We start with a black and white palette and gradually build in color, so this is a color class as well as a head study class. Each stage is doable and interesting as we gradually expand our circle of knowledge. Remember, repetition is your friend! This class meets every other week with an uninstructed “open studio” on the off weeks. All levels welcome.

    • Week 1 Class: Fundamentals of shadow shapes. Value scale and control.
    • Week 2: Open studio with week 1 demo video
    • Week 3 Class: Examples and inspiration. Value range options.

    • Week 5 Class: Using student-submitted scrap we go to two-color palettes.
    • Week 6: Open studio with week 5 demo video
