Join 13brokenhorses (Brian McPhee) for a three-week online painting class designed for painters of all levels.
In this class, Brian will guide you through a direct and practical approach to making small, quick gouache studies in your sketchbook. Working from landscape or still-life subjects, you’ll learn how to simplify what you see and make confident decisions about composition, value, and color.
Each study will focus on three essential steps:
• Simplify the subject-reduce the composition to its basic shapes.
• Identify the values-establish the light and dark patterns.
• Address local color-add color while keeping the larger structure of the painting clear.
These small, full-color studies can become the starting point for larger, more developed paintings. You’ll learn how to simplify a composition to fit a small sketchbook format while developing strong ideas for future work.
Brian will also demonstrate problem-solving strategies and a straightforward approach to painting both transparently and opaquely.
Students may work in gouache or acrylic. Brian will demo in gouache.
