Learn to see and organize your paintings and drawings with an eye for the abstract during this 5-week online course presented live over Zoom. Consider elements of design, form, space, divisions/intervals, proportion, surface geometry and color relationships. Students will be guided through ways of working from direct observation, constructing paintings and drawings from various sources and building from the foundation of master transcriptions. Students will learn approaches towards finding a solid formal structure that can be applied to painting any subject or motif. Class projects will be completed in both drawing media and oil paint.

Students will have some opportunity for working in-class for a portion of our weekly zoom meetings, but most projects will require additional work throughout the week. The instructor will provide individual feedback weekly through the class message board.

Some basic familiarity with oil paint is preferred.

Weekly Topics:

Week 1 Observing Abstraction: placement, proportion, intervals, movement and stillness in a composition

Week 2 Flatness and Space: internal geometry, geometry of the rectangle, autonomous form/shape

Week 3 Transcription, Interpretation, Invention: transcribe (copy) a master painting and use this as a basis for your own painting or drawing by working directly over and into it.

Week 4 Constructed Painting: composing a synthetic studio painting from multiple sources, organizing disparate elements into a unified image.

Week 5 Constructed Painting (continued): color as a compositional element, color proportion, using value and color to create layered readings of your composition.
