Capturing the personality and emotion of an animal is why we love to paint them! In this 2-week class, award-winning artist Patty Voje will guide you through her process for creating expressive pet portraits. Using the alla prima method of painting, she will demonstrate how to fearlessly develop and finish a painting in one sitting.
Patty will cover essential techniques, such as developing an underpainting to establish values and using exercises for achieving looser brushwork and better edges, as well as imparting tips for effective color mixing and application. She will also emphasize the importance of “seeing” vs “doing,” helping you approach your work with greater intention.
Each week will include demonstrations, discussions about materials and techniques, and thoughtfully designed assignments to help you practice and improve. Time will also be reserved at the end of each session for Q&A. Individual feedback on assignments will be shared on the class message board. By the end of the workshop, you will leave with practical advice to inspire your ongoing practice and tips for incorporating painting into your daily routine. Be sure to have 2 to 3 reference photos ready to work from. Please refer to the materials list for guidance on how to choose great reference images.
Along with learning to paint more expressively, you will explore the benefits of working smaller- a practice that can fast-track your skills and boost your confidence.

Patty Voje is an award-winning artist based in Saint Paul, Minnesota. A figurative painter, most of her work is “alla prima” – completed in one sitting. Her command of bold color and expressive brushwork mark her style. Patty has exhibited nationally and is the recipient of numerous accolades. She studied Fine Art at the University of Minnesota and at The Atelier of Minneapolis. She is proud to be affiliated with American Women Artists, Oil Painters of America, American Impressionist Society and Outdoor Painters of Minnesota. Born and raised in the Midwest, Patty grew up on a small hobby farm where she had the good fortune to include pigs, sheep and the occasional chicken as members of the family. Her love of animals figures prominently in her art. Patty travels extensively for both pleasure and painting. In the summer you can find her in her trusty Airstream, traveling the country to compete in plein air events, stopping along the way whenever a field of cattle presents itself.
She is available for individual instruction, small group classes and workshops. Patty is an inspiring teacher who believes that sharing her process and technique is just as important as sharing her finished work.
