Explore mokuhanga, water-based Japanese woodblock printing, and the ways different washi (Japanese paper) affect a finished print.
Students will carve large, simple shapes into woodblocks and print them by hand using watercolor and gouache. We will experiment with different printing methods to create areas of flat color, gradients, and textures.
Students will also print on several types of washi, and compare how each paper responds to pigment, moisture, and pressure.
Students will have the option to bind their prints into a simple book, creating a useful reference guide to Japanese washi.
This online class is open to all skill levels.
