Discover the bold textures, vibrant color, and expressive possibilities of painting with a palette knife in this three-week still life workshop. Whether you’re new to the palette knife or looking to bring more energy and confidence to your painting, you’ll learn how this versatile tool can simplify forms, create dynamic surfaces, and encourage a fresh, painterly approach.
Through step-by-step demonstrations, guided exercises, and individual feedback, you’ll explore techniques for loading and handling the knife, mixing clean, luminous color, building rich impasto textures, and creating strong shapes with confident, decisive strokes. Working from carefully arranged still life setups, you’ll learn to simplify what you see, capture light and form with bold marks, and develop paintings that feel lively, expressive, and full of movement.
By the end of the workshop, you’ll have a collection of finished studies, a stronger understanding of palette knife techniques, and the confidence to incorporate this exciting approach into your own painting practice.

From upended roses to figures whose faces are obscured by gestures of undress, Lindsay Frei‘s striking subjects encompass moments of vulnerability. Bold brushstrokes and exuberant palettes extol a vibrant, unapologetic femininity that simultaneously embraces and undermines conventional Western concepts of beauty.

She received her MFA in Studio Art from the University of Utah. Lindsay encourages creative expression and exploration in her community, and provides art education for children and individuals facing illness.
