Class Dates: Tuesdays, June 16 & 23, 2026

During the pandemic, Susan Greenstein began a daily drawing practice inspired by museum collections from around the world. Each day, she selected a single object – a vessel, textile, sculpture, mask, or artifact—and responded to it through drawing. Over time, these studies evolved into richly layered pages that combined observation, interpretation, and written reflections. Sometimes the writing focused on the history of the object, sometimes on personal observations, and often on both. Incorporating text into the drawings opened up new possibilities for composition, allowing imagery, pattern, lettering, and storytelling to work together on the page.

Join Susan for this engaging two-week workshop as she guides participants in developing their own drawing practice inspired by museum collections from across cultures and time periods. Through close observation and thoughtful interpretation, students will explore how drawing can become both a visual and reflective practice. Emphasis will be placed on designing dynamic pages that combine image-making, text, and expressive mark-making into cohesive compositions full of rhythm, contrast, and character.

Working primarily with a brush pen, participants will experiment with a wide range of marks—from delicate linear passages to bold areas of deep value. The fluidity and versatility of the brush pen will encourage expressive drawing while helping students explore texture, pattern, shape, and strong light-dark relationships. Along the way, Susan will share strategies for simplifying complex forms, developing visual storytelling, and creating pages that feel both personal and visually compelling.

This workshop is open to all levels and is ideal for anyone interested in drawing, sketchbook practice, museum collections, visual journaling, or combining words and images in creative way

Susan Greenstein lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. She received her BFA at Pratt Institute where she was exposed to many ways of working and looking at the world. A deep interest in pattern has been a constant inspiration for Greenstein. At times she finds these patterns while observing flora and architecture at how they are interwoven. At other times, Greenstein finds these patterns in a more abstracted form. This can especially be seen in her recent monoprints, which are inspired by memories of patterns.
