This studio course invites students to explore the world of animal portraiture under the guidance of accomplished Utah artist Lindsay Frei. Designed for artists of all levels, the class blends foundational drawing and painting skills with advanced strategies for capturing the individuality, anatomy, and emotional presence of our pets.
Students will study proportion, structure, and gesture as they learn to translate observation into expressive, lifelike portraits. Through demonstrations, guided practice, and personalized critique, the instructor will introduce approaches to composition, lighting, color harmony, and mark‑making that elevate animal portraiture beyond simple likeness. Emphasis is placed on developing a personal artistic voice while gaining confidence in both traditional and contemporary techniques.
By the end of the course, students will complete a portrait of their pet and build a stronger understanding of how to portray character, mood, and narrative through animal subjects. This class is ideal for artists seeking to expand their portfolio, deepen their technical skill, or simply celebrate the unique spirit of dogs through art.

From upended roses to figures whose faces are obscured by gestures of undress, Lindsay Frei‘s striking subjects encompass moments of vulnerability. Bold brushstrokes and exuberant palettes extol a vibrant, unapologetic femininity that simultaneously embraces and undermines conventional Western concepts of beauty.
Lindsay’s work has been exhibited nationally since 2000 and featured in publications such as Salt Lake Magazine, Southwest Art Magazine, Sacramento Magazine and Poets and Artists. She received her MFA in Studio Art from the University of Utah. Lindsay encourages creative expression and exploration in her community, and provides art education for children and individuals facing illness. She is currently an Artist in Residence at Huntsman Cancer institute, and an Adjunct Art Professor at the University of Utah.
