This four-week class focuses on the process of developing a painting over time, from an initial idea through multiple stages of reflection and process. Students may work on a still life, portrait, or landscape, choosing a subject or motif that interests them personally. The emphasis is on moving thoughtfully through each stage of painting, rather than rushing toward a finished image.
We will begin by discussing motif, reference selection and composition, including how to evaluate images, simplify complex information, and identify strong starting points. Students will develop a drawing and then explore strategies for transferring it to the painting surface. From there, we will establish an underpainting and build the painting through multiple passes. At each stage, we will reflect on what the painting is revealing as it develops, paying attention to what is working, what feels unresolved, and how new information emerges through the act of painting itself.
Throughout the four weeks, we will address how to assess whether a painting is working by looking closely at values, color relationships, structure, edges, and overall coherence. The goal is to build confidence not only in technique, but in decision-making and process, learning how to respond to a painting as it evolves.
