How can a landscape feel alive — not just observed, but experienced?

Landscapes Reimagined is an expressive painting course that explores landscape through atmosphere, weather, memory, and material play. Rather than focusing on topographical accuracy, the course invites artists to work toward presence and mood — finding ways to let light, wind, and gesture shape the image.

A central reference point for the course is Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven, with particular attention to how Thomson used weather, sky, and seasonal change as emotional drivers in his work. We’ll look at these Canadian painters alongside artists such as J.M.W. Turner, Peter Doig, andCaser David Friedrich, tracing how landscape can move from observation into something poetic and personal.

Each week introduces a new way of approaching landscape painting, supported by live demonstrations, guided prompts, and artist examples. Students will see how a painting can evolve in real time — through layering, wet-in-wet passages, expressive mark-making, and selective abstraction.

The course is medium-flexible and open to painters working in gouache, watercolour, acrylic, inks, or mixed media. You may work from reference, plein air studies, or imagination. All levels are welcome, especially artists interested in loosening their approach, deepening atmosphere, and rethinking what landscape painting can be.
