Join art writer John Seed, the author of “Disrupted Realism” for four sessions introducing the history and fundamentals of art criticism and art writing. Seed will offer students a critical framework and emphasize the potential for art criticism as a form of exploration balanced by judgement. He will also discuss the current state of art writing and the various types of publications and platforms that support it. Expect an encouraging atmosphere that combines online lectures with opportunities for discussion. There is no required work, but the instructor will be happy to suggest and read writing exercises for those who wish to do them.

Week One: A brief history of art criticism and Feldman’s method.

Week Two: Modernity and criticism.

Week Three: Forms of contemporary art writing.

Week Four: Practicing art writing and criticism.
