Soo Hong – Floral Gestures: Monotype on Sumi Paper

While studying sumi painting, I noticed that flowers and plants have gestures, much like the human body. Artists often explore gestures through drawing or by using paints with different thicknesses. In this workshop, I’ll introduce a new method: creating floral images using gestural mark-making with a gelli plate.

Wayne Jiang – Vibrant Floral Painting with Transparent Acrylic Glazes

Wayne will show you how to create a floral painting using transparent acrylic glazes in about an hour. Taking advantage of acrylic’s fast-drying time, this multiple layering acrylic technique is an efficient way to create paintings with vibrant, translucent colors, and fine details in a short time. This is a great technique for folks transitioning from watercolor or gouache to acrylic.

Richard Suckling – Summer Blooms in Soft Pastel and Mixed Media

Join Richard Suckling for a lively and inspiring one-hour floral demo as he explores experimental techniques that combine soft pastels with water-based media. Using methods like crushing, sprinkling, splashing, and dragging, Richard will demonstrate how to create exciting textures and dynamic effects. He’ll also incorporate materials such as water, alcohol, and gouache to push the boundaries of traditional pastel work and reveal new creative possibilities.

In this fun one-hour demonstration, Yana Beylinson will guide you through her process of creating paper collages using a photograph as a reference. Whether as a finished piece or a study for a larger painting, collage is a powerful tool for exploration and artistic discovery.

Yana will share her disciplined yet playful step-by-step method—from selecting just the right photo reference to planning a cohesive composition. You’ll gain insight into how collage can clarify your ideas, ignite creativity, and serve as a springboard for future paintings.

  1. Thank you so much Carol McGuire for sharing your process. I learnt so much about steps to produce a loose & colourful painting. So inspired I am already using your process for this painting, tomorrow I pull out the palette knife! So excited!

  2. I just finished watching Sarah’s workshop recording. Fabulous! I love her loose and expressive work, both watercolours and her acrylics. Thank you Martha for hosting all these free demos.

  3. Just finished watching Yana’s collage demo. It was fabulous! I already do watercolour collage with papers I make myself. She gave lots of great tips and things to think about. Such a fun activity that I love to do. Thank you!

  4. I really enjoyed Sarah’s demo today! Thank you for presenting thjs opportunity to see so many wonderful artists working! Here is a little wc inspired by Sarah today. A potted lemongrass plant against the exterior of my studio.

    1. Hi Terri, good question! Festival recordings don’t expire so you can keep watching them in the future! After 30 days, they will be listed also in the Past Free Class Recording Archive where you’ll find all our past festival recordings. I’ll update the notice below the recordings so it’s clear.

  5. Hello, thank you for these lessons. They all look fun.
Question – will we get prior notice of what materials are being used? Are we expected to paint alongside with the artist during these zoom sessions? Thank you.

    1. Hi Sherli, If an instructor sends reference photos or a materials list beforehand, I’ll post them here in advance. I think they often expect for us to watch the first time through. In a pop-up festival like this one, handouts are often distributed in the Zoom chat. I will post as many as possible on this page to go along with the recordings!
