Date: Tuesdays, June 17-July 1, 2025
Time: 9:30 am-12:00 pm Pacific Time (12:30-3:00 pm Eastern Time/5:30-8:00 pm London Time)
Level: All levels welcome
Medium: Mixed media (encaustic paint, drawing materials, pigment sticks and pastels)
Encaustic is one of the oldest painting techniques, created by mixing pure pigment with beeswax and resin. The mixture is applied hot and reheated to fuse the layers together. Combining it with photography offers mixed media artists a truly revelatory experience, showcasing its incredible versatility. Whether you’re new to the medium or have some experience, this quick-start class requires no prior knowledge, and we’ll use some supplies you may already have in your studio.
Working with encaustic expands the traditional methods of hand coloring photographs, allowing you to add rich texture and depth. The look you achieve depends on how you choose combine colorful encaustic paint, drawing materials, pigment sticks, and pastels. I’ll walk you through these techniques using two different projects, sharing how I layer materials and bring my own images to life.
The best part? The process is very forgiving. Changes can be made easily as you work, with your original photograph protected by our first layers of wax. I often work with photos taken on my iPhone, so no fancy camera gear is needed. And if you’d like to follow along step-by-step, I’ll share the same images I’ll use in the demos for you to download. Join me with an open mind, ready to experiment and explore new creative possibilities.
Topics covered will include: Printing and mounting your photographs, layering and texturing wax, incorporating compatible media, and setting up a compact and affordable encaustic workspace at home.
