Barbara Schilling – Four Keys to Color Success in Your Paintings (Online); Wednesdays, August 6-27, 2025

This class was held in the past and is no longer available for registration. Please view our Online Course Catalog for current class listings.

Date: Wednesdays, August 6-27, 2025
Time: 1:00-3:00 pm Pacific Time (4:00-6:00 pm Eastern Time/9:00-11:00 pm London Time)
Level: All
Medium: Oil, water soluble oils or acrylics (Barbara will work in oils)

Week 1 – Learning to judge the value equivalency of colors. Having a strong value structure in your painting is very important but unless you are painting in grayscale you need to be able to translate that value in color.

Week 2 – Understanding the importance of color temperature. It is generally accepted that a warm light source creates cooler shadow colors while a cool light source will create warmer shadow colors. If you are finding your paintings feel “muddy”, it may be the temperature relationships that are off.

Week 3 – Using transparent v. opaque pigments correctly. Transparent pigments set back, and opaque pigments feel solid and set forward in your painting.

Week 4 – Working with complimentary colors to create beautiful neutrals. The importance of less intense tones in your painting is the trick to creating colors that “pop”.
