This hands-on course explores the painting approaches of some of the greatest artists of the Modern era: Matisse, Picasso, Modigliani and Suzanne Valadon. Weekly presentations by the instructor will take a look at the personal history of each artist, the growth of their style and their lives in Montmartre, the incubator of modern art in Paris. Video Demos by the instructor will illustrate each artist’s working methods, materials, palettes and style.

Each week, students will have a project of creating a painting inspired by the work of each great artist, which will be discussed and critiqued by the instructor. The goal of this class is to provide greater insight into painting methods that might add to a student’s personal work and growth.
