Dates: Monday, January 13 , 2024
Time: 10:00 AM-1:00 PM Pacific Time (1:00-4:00 PM Eastern Time/6:00-9:00 PM London Time)
Level: All
Medium: Watercolor, pen & wash
Using a loose sketchbook style, paint the subtle colors of winter, incorporating your visits to local parks and gardens as well as your own neighborhood. We’ll create nature studies of winter plants, and then paint snow scenes, and early blooming plants like hellebores, witch hazels and camellias, employing watercolor, pen and wash and watercolor pencils. Some of our sketches will be very loose, and other work can be developed into more detailed studies. We’ll also paint larger landscapes, with a similar approach—quick applications of pencil and wash, and more fully realized outdoor landscapes. We will address important concerns like: What makes a good subject? How to compose a landscape sketch? What to include, what to leave out? Which medium is most suited for a particular subject. Handouts will be available before class begins to help you answer these questions.
Students will contact me ahead of class time and I will help them select their subjects ahead of time, using photos or plein air sketches, or can follow what I demonstrate.
