Édouard Manet called still life “the touchstone of painting.” For centuries, the traditional genre of still life painting has presented an excellent path for the artist to learn critical skills and techniques. By painting fruit, flowers, and common objects, you can develop stronger painting skills, learn to compose values and shapes effectively, and improve your color mixing and paint application, all while working from life.
In this class, we will focus on establishing a solid foundation in painting still life in oil, beginning with an overview of materials and basic procedure. This class will focus especially on using value and temperature to show form. We will also focus specifically on a variety of challenging materials and subjects, including metal, glass, and flowers.
This is a great class for any beginner or intermediate painter, for students who would like to solidify their understanding of the fundamentals.
