Dates: Tuesdays, March 19-April 2, 2024
Time: 11:00 AM-1:30 PM Pacific Time/2:00-4:30 PM Eastern Time
Level: All
Medium: Gel Plate with Acrylics or Water-based relief printmaking ink
Monotype, “the painterly print,” is made by painting on a smooth surface and then “pulling” one unique print. We will use a gel (or gelli) plate, which transfers acrylic paint or water-based printmaking ink without the need for a printing press. You will learn how to develop dynamic, simplified compositions from photographs that will provide a structure for your prints. We will experiment with gestural marks using a range of tools to convey plant, land, and cloud forms. Layering through successive print “passes” or “pulls” and registration methods will also be covered. The addition of collage and relief printing methods to enhance your prints will be explored. No prior experience with printmaking or gel plate is needed. Students will be able to show their work online for group discussions.
