This class was held in the past and is no longer available for registration. Please view our Online Course Catalog for current class listings.

Date: Wednesdays, November 8 & 15, 2023
Time: 12:00-1:30 PM Pacific Time, 3:00-4:30 PM Eastern Time, 8:00-9:30 PM London Time
Level: All
Medium: All media (including digital)

A common problem that plagues most artists is the issue of “overworking”: losing the energy and excitement present at the beginning as you progress through the later (often more analytical) stages of any project. This class will break down the creative process into separate stages and encourage artists to intervene at the right time to preserve the expressive, immediate qualities that occur effortlessly when starting a painting.

Week 1: “Making a Fresh Start”.  We’ll examine famously “unfinished” paintings by artists famous for not refining their paintings beyond the initial strokes. Students will be encouraged to stop at various intervals and develop a comfort level with allowing the work to “rest” until week 2.

Week 2: “Finalizing without Finishing”. We’ll examine strategies for prioritizing refinements, targeting different areas of the artwork for completion and allowing the rest of the painting to retain its initial expressive charm.

Open to all media and subject matter including digital

“Finishing things is a goal for imbeciles”- Cezanne

Mark Daniel Nelson approaches both painting and teaching in much the same way: He strives to simplify and organize information until it reaches its most potent, elemental form. A student of both representational and non-objective painting, Nelson regularly fuses seemingly incongruous approaches to create new and unexpected results. “I strive for two things,” the artist states in his characteristically blunt manner, “impact and beauty. Eliminate the unnecessary parts and you’re left with much more powerful, beautiful modes of expression.” Mark Daniel Nelson is represented by Maxwell Alexander Gallery in Culver City, California, Gallery 1261 in Denver, CO and Jack Meier Gallery in Houston, TX. He has taught extensively in Art History, Human Anatomy, Drawing and Painting across the US. markdanielnelson.com
