***This class requires completing the prerequisite, Section 1: Landscape Painting in the Tonalist Style.
For those who want to continue to explore Tonalism, you’ll continue to learn and apply techniques and methods used in creating Tonalist landscapes from Section 1– this time with a focus on painting the seasons. Capturing light, luminosity and atmosphere are main components in Tonalism. The unique color and light of each of the 4 seasons will be discussed and demonstrated.
Further exploration of color and color mixing using complementaries; applying techniques to achieve soft light, and simplifying form will guide the workshop. Continued study of historical and contemporary works will provide insight to the techniques and methods of Tonalism in landscape painting.
Each class session includes instructor demos, guided exercises, group discussion and critique of participants’ work. Group critiques throughout the class will offer an opportunity for growth, to share ideas and learn from others. Participants will paint outside of class and can work from imagination or photo reference.
Mark Russell has been creating landscape and nature paintings for more than 30 years. He has exhibited his work in group shows, in galleries and museums across the country and won numerous awards.
