I will paint three small colour studies of the same arrangement, life-size, the size it is.

I gravitate towards the abstract, and general, and focus on the big shapes and colours. My arrangement will be blue, yellow, black – a black diary, a blue cup, a lemon or two. It depends what colours you’d like in a painting. We’ll talk about it.

Painting in threes helps me – I’m more inclined to hold back a little and let the paint be paint – coloured mud, smeared and dragged on the surface. Have fun with paint, that is the hope. Using scraps of card and paper is good for that.

Some experience of drawing helps but all levels are welcome.

Students are encouraged to máke notes and join in when they like. There’s an online message board where students can put their colour studies after this class – it’ll be there for a few weeks and help will be given.

Michael Weller studied librarianship in Manchester and realised early on he didn’t want to be a librarian. Life-drawing cheered him up. Later he did a degree in Fine Art and studied portrait-painting at Lavender Hill Studios and drawing and painting with the New English Art Club. In 2015 he won the Le Clerc Fowle Medal for a group of outstanding paintings at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters’ annual exhibition, and the Winsor & Newton Award for a painting at the New English Art Club annual exhibition. michaelweller.co.uk
