Larry Calkins – The Art of Pochoir (Recording)

Simply stated, pochoir is the French word for stencil.  In the 1920s and 30s Art Deco era, the color application process of the stencil was rejuvenated by the French, bringing color illustration processes for books and prints to new glorious heights. Many artists over the years have used this versatile method, including Picasso, Joan Miro, Paul Klee.

Using various mediums such as acrylic, oil paint, encaustic wax, and even tempera, Larry Calkins will share how he creates scissor-cut paper stencils to make complex paintings on various surfaces including wood, paper, or canvas.

Larry will share examples, as well as an in-depth history of the process.

Larry Calkins was born in 1955 in Corvallis, OR, and grew up in a small logging community named Harlan. He stepped into the family tradition of working within logging operations, but after serious injuries in logging accidents, he decided to pursue a career in the arts. He has lived in London, England, and has traveled widely throughout the US and Europe.  Larry is a very prolific artist and has created a vast body of work, that has been shown in many galleries since 1994.  Calkins has been Artist in Residence at the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, WA and has taught workshops and classes for many years in the Seattle area. calkinsart.net
