One image or subject can plant the seed for many different paintings. The color and shapes we observe from life give us just one possibility. If we allow our imagination or our memory of what we see into the process, our paintings become more alive and aligned with our unique artist sensibilities.
In this 1 1/2 hour demo, Grace shares the creative practice she uses to break free from the constraints of observational painting: the color study. Using intuitive approaches to color, she will show us how to make several color studies from one reference photo — one from observation, one from memory, and two from imagination. These quick studies generate different colors of light and become vital resources for creating mood and narrative in a larger painting. Grace will discuss how to use the small studies alongside the original reference image to develop a rich and personal translation of the subject.

Grace is currently a teaching artist with Terracotta, Gage Academy adult and youth programs (since 2016), AIGA (since 2018), and Bainbridge Island Museum of Art (since 2019), in addition to teaching privately online.
Her work is held in public and private collections internationally.
