Egg tempera painting was a primary method of painting until the16th Century and was used extensively throughout the Italian Renaissance. Examples of it from the First Century AD still exist.
Egg tempera is a permanent, fast-drying painting medium consisting of colored pigments mixed with egg yolk. It is extremely permanent, and does not darken with the age. Stewart White will walk you through the basics and practical application of painting with this medium, from creating paint by mixing pure pigments with egg yolk, to applying thin layers of it. The technique of painting layer upon layer results in a smooth luminous surface.

Maryland painter Stewart White is a watercolorist from Baltimore, He is one of the rare plein air painters using the medium of watercolor and egg tempera. His background in architectural illustration adds to his skill set and his paintings reflect his knowledge of good design. Stewart’s paintings have the pleasing combination of good structure with a painterly style. He paints in transparent watercolors, egg tempera and oils.
