The simplest tool, burnt carbon, is a tried-and-true material for creating beautiful drawings. While it initially may be hard to control, once learned, you can construct a drawing in short order. Charcoal is a great medium for quickly massing in your big shapes while allowing for immediate assessment of proportion and value relationships.  Using additive and deductive methods on toned paper participants will quickly learn the many benefits of this medium.  It is so useful to know for all aspects of art making.  Some drawing experience preferred.
