It’s hard to even comprehend the making of art without thinking about color. To the extent that we sometimes take it for granted. From the relative simplicity of mining minerals that provide colorants to chemical reactions that have yielded surprises, all of the colors we use have fascinating origin stories.
In this monthly series, Chris will take you through each color and how it came to be. She will show you some of the best applications of it throughout the history of art followed by a demonstration using different pigments of the featured color.
This series will kick off with BLUE, possibly the most precious color in terms of symbolism and monetary value. At times in history it has been more costly than gold.
Whether you are an art history buff or a dedicated artist wanting to know more about your materials, this class will inform, inspire and is sure to increase your love of color.

Chris teaches private and studio classes emphasizing proper use of materials and technique. At the same time she guides each student, no matter what their level of experience, to move towards developing their own individual expression.
She has a BA in Art from the University of Detroit. www.chriswitkowski.com
